Chris van der Drift gets Taupo call ahead of Reid and Bamber PDF E-mail

A1 Team New Zealand’s Black Beauty roars into life in just over three weeks for the team’s home race in Taupo, over the weekend 23-25 January 2009. In the build up to the race, the team is proud to announce Hamilton born Chris van der Drift as the driver to power Black Beauty around Taupo for the third time that A1GP action hits New Zealand.

Having shared driving duties with Earl Bamber for the current season of A1GP racing, van der Drift gets back behind the wheel for Round Four of Season Four of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport.

2008 has been a year of on track success for van der Drift, the 22-year-old driver winning the International Formula Master title in style after claiming second overall in the same championship in 2007. On his way to securing championship victory, the young Kiwi won six races, and was on the podium a total of ten times.

van der Drift grew up and raced in New Zealand until he was 17, and won a huge number of New Zealand Kartsport titles in this time. He now bases himself in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, as he chases the motor-racing circuit around the globe.

‘Vandy’ as he’s known to his friends and fans was on duty at Chengdu, China for Round Two of the current season of the A1GP championship. The weekend proved to be one to forget, with the bumpy nature of the circuit not mating well to van der Drift’s aggressive and late braking driving technique.

The team took home just two points from Chengdu, but the allowance for teams to drop their lowest points score of the season will no doubt help the team at the tail end of the season.

GPWorld-Online EXCLUSIVE: Interlagos set to hold 2008-09 season finale PDF E-mail
News - 2008-09 News
Monday, 01 December 2008 22:58

It is believed that Interlagos in Brazil, site of this year's dramatic Formula 1 season finale, could also host the finale of the fourth season of A1GP.

We can reveal that the World Cup of Motorsport plans to visit the circuit on the weekend of May 15th-17th 2009, two weeks after the currently planned finale at Brands Hatch.

It is also rumoured that the yet-to-be-announced round on this season's schedule, currently pencilled in for March 27th-29th, could now be filled by Mugello in Italy, rather than Interlagos as we believe was previously planned. Mugello was set to host the opening round of this season, before the delay in the car build schedule forced the cancellation of the round.

Keep checking back here for more, as and when this story develops.

On December 1st we broke a rumour that A1GP were planning to head to Interlagos, Brazil for the final round of the 2008-09 A1GP Season on May 17th 2009.

From our extensive research we have now been able to verify from the FIA that A1GP will indeed be visiting Brazil for the first time on May 17th 2009.

This would be instead of the TBA Venue/Nation scheduled for the 29th March, which at one stage was also rumoured to be held at Interlagos.

Please remember that although the Brazilian round has been confirmed by the FIA, this has yet to be confirmed by A1GP and therefore is still subject to confirmation.

On further news regarding the schedule, the FIA have confirmed that the A1GP Lippo Village Street Circuit is still to be homologated by the FIA and will not be done so until the day preceding the event as is customary with ALL street circuits.

We also reported a while back about how the Mexican round of the season may be in danger due to the fabled 'Peraltada' corner - a banked 180 degree turn with a concrete barrier on the outside. The FIA deemed this to be unsafe and have asked for the track to be modified before approving the circuit for the race meeting on March 15th.

Finally the new Circuito do Algarve in Portugal is also still to be homologated. This is due the circuit being newly built and not having hosted any previous international single seater motor racing series.

With these revelations from the FIA's 2009 International Series calendar we have accordingly amended our 2008-09 Season calendar.

A1GP World Cup of Motorsport has today confirmed the Italian F3 Champion, Mirko Bortolotti, will drive the A1GP test car at the Portimao Circuit in the Algarve, Portugal from the 10-13 January after impressing Scuderia Ferrari at Fiorano recently. The 18-year-old had his first taste of Formula One with the legendry team at Fiorano, Ferrari’s official test circuit, as part of his reward for winning the Italian Formula 3 Championship, alongside Edoardo Piscopo and Salvatore Cicatelli who also ended the season in the top three. Bortolotti made the biggest impression recording a 59.111-second lap, breaking the lap record.

Mario Almondo, Operations Director, Gestione Sportiva said: “We are extremely happy that a young Italian driver who won the Italian Formula 3 Championship, and has shown his talent in a test day with the Ferrari F1 car, can have a such a good opportunity with A1GP.”

Current championship leader, A1 Team Ireland, is enjoying being top of the tables heading into the Christmas period. Its star driver, Portadown’s Adam Carroll, was honoured by Ireland's motorsport media with their Manley Award for International Driver of the Year last Tuesday (9 December). Carroll's race performances in A1GP saw his name added to the prestigious trophy, which has been won in the past by Formula One drivers Eddie Irvine and Martin Donnelly in the past.

"It was a nice surprise," said Carroll of his award win. "I wasn't expecting it and it's an honour to see my name included on the trophy alongside so many great names from Ireland's motorsport past. It's been a great start to the season for us and, while the job is far from finished, it's nice to be receiving recognition for our achievements."
